VIENNA, AUSTRIA — The Filipino diaspora in Austria came together in a vibrant display of patriotism, culture, and community spirit on June 5, 2026, celebrating the 128th Philippine Independence Day at the prestigious Vienna Marriott Hotel.
Organized by the Council of Filipino Associations in Austria (CFAA), the glamorous gala brought together community leaders, diplomats, and guests to honor the Philippines’ rich history while reinforcing the community’s commitment to philanthropy back home.
A Vision of Freedom, Future, and History
The evening’s proceedings were officially opened by CFAA Chairman Elmer Blanco, who delivered an inspiring address centered on this year’s theme: “Freedom, Future, History.”
“Freedom—this is the peace that gives us the right to live with dignity; to dream freely, and to love without fear,” Chairman Blanco stated. “We celebrate the strength of our unity as a community and the hope we carry for the future. Our history as Filipinos proves that no matter what storm comes, the Filipino never gives up.”
Beyond celebrating historical milestones, Blanco underscored the CFAA’s active humanitarian efforts. A special video presentation highlighted the organization’s “Aksyon Tulong” initiative, which has successfully deployed relief projects for earthquake victims and distributed critical medicines across various regions in the Philippines. Looking ahead, Blanco announced that the CFAA will be organizing medical missions to the provinces of Benguet and Pangasinan this coming October.
Celebrating 80 Years of Diplomatic Ties
The event’s esteemed guest speaker, Philippine Ambassador to Austria Evangelina Lourdes Arroyo-Bernas, praised the Filipino community for its exemplary standing in Austrian society. Her address also marked a major milestone in bilateral history: the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Austria.
“We are proud of the significant contributions of the Philippine diaspora in Austria,” Ambassador Arroyo-Bernas said. “We are pleased that the Filipinos living here are well integrated and are valued and celebrated for their economic and social contributions.”
A Masterclass in Cultural Heritage
The ballroom of the Vienna Marriott Hotel transformed into a kaleidoscope of color and rhythm, thanks to the meticulous planning of the Program Committee, headed by Carmen Pacaigue, alongside committee member Anni Hruska.
A standout highlight of the committee’s work was the contribution of Dorcy Aigner, who excellently choreographed both the Rigodon de Honor and the complex mixed cultural dances. Under her creative direction, CFAA officers and members showcased a breathtaking array of traditional Filipino attire and folklore.
The cultural program featured a series of captivating performances:
- Musical Tributes: Soprano Nancy Ostol-Agbon captivated the audience with her soulful rendition of traditional Tagalog Kundiman songs.
- The Rigodon de Honor: CFAA members performed the elegant, Spanish-influenced courtship dance, gliding across the ballroom floor with poise and precision.
- The Mixed Cultural Dance Highlight: The undisputed climax of the evening was a simultaneous presentation of nine distinct traditional Filipino dances, set to the energetic beat of the tourism anthem “Tara na, Kanta ng Pilipinas.”

Following the formal program, the celebration transitioned into a lively social affair. Attendees took to the floor for hours of ballroom dancing, while excitement peaked during the raffle draw, where numerous lucky winners walked away with grand tombola prizes.
